Heesoo Lee’s work explores the vulnerability of the human condition through the metaphor of the natural world. Her artistic language, formed by observations of material, nature, and place, engages with themes of identity, connection, and time.

View all works. Skip to end of content. In Dreams Heesoo Lee was born and raised in Seoul, South Korea and earned her BA in art from Ewha University. Lee began a full-time studio practice in Berkeley, CA in 2000. From there, she relocated to Maui, where she established a thriving studio business. Lee was a summer resident at the Archie Bray Foundation for Ceramic Arts in 2013 and returned in Heesoo Lee January 6 – February 3, 2017. Renown for her techniques in realist painting with thirty or more layers of pigmented clay, Heesoo Lee addresses intricate human conditions through vibrant iterations of the natural world.

Artist Heesoo Lee uses multi-layered techniques to form intricate trees, complete with leaves and branches, that seem to grow out of her functional ceramic vessels.Lee’s careful use of color establishes a seasonal mood in each of her works, some evoking the warm tones and fallen leaves of autumn, while others capture the barren beauty of winter. Heesoo Lee has spent years carefully layering blades of grass, pine trees, and cherry blossoms to construct botanic entanglements that crawl across ceramic mugs and bowls.
